This catalog is set in an old typeface and printed in old colors, but it is meant to work on modern equipment — including the equipment people use when their eyes, ears or hands need the help. Below is a plain account of what the Department has done, what it has not done yet, and how to tell us when something gets in your way.

What is in place

• Readable type. Body text runs at 15–17px with generous line spacing, in dark ink on cream rather than grey on white, and it scales when you enlarge the page in your browser. Nothing you need is baked into a picture.
• Keyboard and screen readers. Every page is ordinary web text, not an image of a page. Links and buttons are real links and buttons, reachable in order with the Tab key, and they show a visible outline when the keyboard reaches them. Enter or the space bar works them; the Escape key shuts any panel that has opened over the page. Photographs carry written descriptions.
• The telephone-sized edition. A separate layout is drawn for narrow screens, with full-width tap targets rather than shrunk-down desktop controls.
• Plain instructions. Directions for every preparation are printed in words on the product page as well as on the package.
• Contrast and motion. Ink and paper are checked against the WCAG 2.2 AA contrast standard at both the desk size and the telephone size. The sections that fade in as you scroll hold still instead if your machine is set to reduce motion.

What is not done yet

The Department would rather admit these than claim a clean sheet. The catalog has not been tested end to end with every screen reader and magnifier on the market — the checking so far has been our own. A handful of archive photographs carry short descriptions where they deserve longer ones. Purely decorative rules and ornaments are marked to be passed over rather than described, which is the correct practice but does mean a screen reader tells you nothing about them. And the moving pictures are hosted on YouTube, whose captions are not ours to guarantee. These are on the bench, not forgotten.
