Dept. P — the photographic record.
A small standing exhibition of photographs about ears, hearing and the people who looked after them. Some plates come from public collections. Others come from the families of the people who work here, lent with their permission.
Public-collection photographs of hearing examinations, medical outings and clinic work from the last century — the ordinary business of looking in someone’s ear, before any of the equipment we use now existed.
Eight plates from one family album, beginning with a young man at a Waikiki payphone beside a surfboard rack, around 1965. Printed here with the original white borders intact, by his son’s wish, under the name everyone actually called him.
Three plates of one man across his early life, arranged youngest to oldest. The Department keeps them together because they show a childhood that taught someone to handle things with care, which turned out to be the whole job.
